Ratanakiri is a legendary part of Cambodia that people know little about. Ratanakiri, the word sounds crystal clear like its several natural springs, deep like its primary forests, and fierce... read more like its people. It has something so mysterious that you would not be at rest until your curiosisty is quenched by visiting it. But if you want to do so in good conditions, do trust yourselves into the hands of the little guys of the Parrot Tours in Banlung. Those little guys of Parrots Tours, they speak a perfect English learnt from their father, and they are not only welcoming, but also witty and warm-hearted. With them, you will always have your visiting requests answered. My husband and I spent three days in Ratanakiri with Jammy and his team, made members of his family and friends, stuck under his leadership. In spite of his young age, Jammy is already a kind of patriarch, a great negotiator and a thoughtful organizer. With them we visited waterfalls, lakes, elephant ngos, ethnic minorities villages, rubber plantations, precious stone mines, the town and big market of banlung, and a very lovely stone merchant there gave me handfuls of little pits of precious stones, for free. During the visit, we also went to the restaurant managed by Jammy’s spouse, and I enjoyed a very tasteful plate of carbonara pasta there. Visiting Ratanakiri is no doubt a privilege, but doing so with Jammy and his team would make the experience really worth its while. You would not mind visiting Ratanakiri with Parrot Tours once again.
October 2, 2023Once in a lifetime experience! - We had a very nice time on the three day jungle trekking through Virachey National Park! We had one guide and two rangers who were very kind. Jungle Trek into Virachey National Park 4 days/3 nights - I went on a 4 day/3 night jungle trek touring Virachey National Park in Rattanakiri Province organized by Parrot Tours and Jammy. The travel group consisted of 2 tourists (my... read more partner and me) and two local ethnic indigenous Kravet guides, Mr. Kroich and Mr. Lai. I want to preface this review with the context that I am Cambodian-American and can communicate in Khmer, thus we did not need a Khmer translator for our particular trek. Communication with Jammy and guides were great.
The trek was well organized as we met with Jammy and stayed at his accommodations the night before arriving at the local Kravet village. The first day consisted of a short day hike from the Kravet village to the entrance of Virachey NP. The next few days consisted of hiking on a well established trail within Virachey NP, consisting of mostly tropical evergreen forest. Wildlife sightings are rare, but the guides knew the hotspots of where local gibbons call and can be seen. Other wildlife sightings include rare birds and invertebrates such as tarantulas; make sure you ask your guides on where to find them.
This trek is a good trip for those who are moderately in shape and enjoy hiking in warm temperatures for up to 5-6 hours with intermediate breaks in-between. You should also pack your equipment lightly, as the guides will be carrying most of the cookware and setting up other things for camp, such as hammocks.
On the last day we observed our guides build a raft for the raft ride back downstream, which was a much needed respite from our full three days of hiking.
Jammy was great to communicate with and once you are in Banlang, he will do everything to make sure you are accommodated and prepared well for the jungle trek.
May 8, 2023Pleasant three-day trek - I participated in a three day / two night trek with Parrot Tours. We were four tourists, one English speaking guide (Mr Sakal) and two local guides. We had a... read more great time. The trek was quite challenging, but really enjoyable. Once we entered the national park we didn't meet anyone else and the jungle was quite pretty, even towards the end of the dry season. We slept in hammocks. The guides were very friendly and Sakal was very informative. He is really proud of his English skills and with good reason: his English is better than that of most guides I've talked to during my travels these past few months. The guides cooked us food in bamboo and everything was delicious. They also made us tea, seasoned with some kind of tree bark. We were not lucky enough to see the gibbons, but we heard them.
April 5, 2023Day tour. - Today we have had a fantastic experience with Parrot Tours. We have had a full day out with English speaking guide Mr Free. We have visited villages, gem mine, cemetery... read more and the crator lake . Throughout the day we have had frequent stops for Mr Free to show us local agricultural and plants. Our guide was friendly and very knowledgeable. A first class experience.

We did a 3 D 2N jungle trek in Virachey National park, which included hiking through the jungle, sleeping in the jungle in hammocks, swimming in a beautiful river, making... read more a raft, rafting and sleeping at a local homestay. We had an amazing time with our guide Blanket and ranger Proyt. Both grew up in the jungle, Blanket his English was very good and Proyt knew a lot about the plants and trees we crossed. The tour is not rushed so you have time to enjoy the nature at your own pace. The trek really takes you into the national park. If you stay at the homestay of the family of Proyt, make sure to ask for the short trek to the viewpoint in the morning, because the view was breathtaking.

About Ratanakiri
A province of adventures and home to a burgeoning ecotourism movement.
In the north of Ratanakiri lays the Virachay National Park, the biggest protected area in Cambodia, remains largely unexplored and is home to several ethnic minorities as well as a range of wild animals.
What does Ratanakiri mean?
Ratanakiri means mountain of treasure and gem mining is an important industry for the locals. Beautiful sapphires, amethysts and blue zircon are produced here and it is possible to visit the mines, see the mining process and experience first hand how gemstones come out of the ground.
The province capital Banlung
Banlung, is the best base from which to explore the province. While offering quality accomodation the provincial capital still retains its rural, small town feeling.
Sightseeing hotspots in Ratanakiri
Spread over the province are several crater lakes and many beautiful waterfall. The popular Yeak Laom crater lake is just 5 km away from town and a popular hangout place for locals and visitors alike. Over Banlung watches a huge Buddha statue on the Phom Svay mountain from where you can view the most exciting sunsets.
One of the absolute highlights of Ratanakiri is of course the nationalpark where you can trek for several days, discover quiet waterfalls in the jungle and watch endangered gibbons and other wildlife.
