Itinerary
Day 1: 3 – 4hr Trek:
8:30am – Departure from the office in Banlung by moto, car or 4x4WD to Kachon Village. It takes approximately one hour to drive there. When you get to Kachon, you’ll board a motorized boat on the mighty Sesan River. When the weather is clear, the mountains of the Virachey National Park are visible. Upon arrival at the edge of the jungle, you’ll meet our local Kachahian ranger who will guide you on the trek.
The first part of the trek leads you through fields & farms. Then you’ll enter the outskirts of the primary jungle. After a lunch break, the trail continues north and the terrain starts to elevate. The hills offer great views of the lush surrounding jungle. You will walk through the rest of the afternoon until you reach the campsite at the waterfall .You can enjoy a swim in the river, at the bottom of the waterfall, while your guide and ranger set up the campsite and make a fire to cook dinner.
Day 2: 5 – 6hr Trek:
After a good sleep in the serene jungle, breakfast will be ready. The trek will lead you deeper into the primary jungle. During the trek, you will take regular breaks to relax and enjoy the surrounding jungle. The guide and ranger will show and explain to you some of the area’s natural resources. Many of the plants you’ll be shown are edible, some are drinkable, while others are poisonous.
There is a chance to come across native wildlife such as gibbons, silver langur monkeys, deer, wild pigs, wild cats and even bear. Although we cannot guarantee seeing all types of wildlife, it is very unusual not to see at least a few species. After 3 hours hiking, you’ll get to a river where you’ll take a break for lunch. In the afternoon, you and the ranger will go on a discovery mission where paths will need to be cut by a machete. In the late afternoon, you’ll return to the place where you had lunch and set up camp.
After dinner, you’ll start a night trek where you’ll be looking for wildlife using head torches. When trekking through the jungle in the day time, animals will try to remain quiet and out of site. However, at night the jungle comes alive and your chances to see animals increases. On the rare chance you don’t get to see any animals at night, the jungle is still very impressive. After an hour or so, you’ll return to the campsite and make yourself comfy by the fire before going to bed.
Day 3 : 4hr Trek
After breakfast, the trek changes direction heading south towards Koah Piek village (the village of the Kachah tribe and of your ranger) where you’ll see small farm houses dotted around the landscape. You will then take your lunch break. After lunch, you’ll continue further south until you reach the Sesan River. Here you’ll leave your back-packs and visit the sacred Kachah cemetery.
This cemetery has remarkable high wooden statues that resemble the deceased. Your guide will provide you details about the animist beliefs of the indigenous people. Next, you will enjoy a boat ride back to Kachon. From here, you are transferred back to Banlung arriving at around 4:00pm.
