8 Days / 7 Nights Adventurous Deep Virachey National Park Trekking & Bamboo Rafting

Itinerary For 8 Days / 7 Nights Trek

Day 1: Banlung – Kavet Tribal Village – Jungle Waterfall Camp (approx. 8-10km trekking)

  • 5 hrs trekking | Meals: Lunch & Dinner
  • Depart Banlung at 8:30 AM for Veun Sai District (1-hour drive, 40 km).
  • Cross the Sesan River by boat, then travel along the O’Lalai River (40 min) until reaching a remote Kavet minority village, where many families still live in bamboo houses. (During dry season, when the river is too shallow, we cross by ferry and continue by motorbike-trailer or car).
  • Meet your tribal ranger, enjoy lunch in the village, then begin your jungle adventure.
  • Highlights:
    • Learn how locals coax tarantulas out of their burrows.
    • Swim across a jungle river (your belongings will be waterproofed and floated across).
    • Trek through bamboo forest to reach a waterfall campsite, where you’ll sleep in hammocks under the stars.
  • Evening: Dinner by firelight. Optional night safari trek to spot nocturnal wildlife.

Day 2: Trekking into the Old-Growth Jungle (approx. 10-15km trekking)

  • 5–6 hrs trekking | Jungle camping
  • Wake to the calls of gibbons, monkeys, and birds.
  • Trek through ancient forest with giant hardwood trees hundreds of years old. Off-the-beaten paths often require machete-clearing by the ranger.
  • Learn about jungle survival: drink water from vines, identify edible fruits, and avoid poisonous plants.
  • Wildlife possibilities: gibbons, macaques, hornbills, wild boar, deer, and—rarely—bears. (No wildlife sightings guaranteed.)
  • Evening: Camp in a remote, untouched area of the forest.

Day 3: Into the Heart of the Jungle & Night Trek ( 10-15km walking )

  • 5 hrs trekking | Deep jungle camp
  • Push deeper into the most isolated parts of Virachey.
  • Evening: Set up camp and join a 2-hour night hike with headlamps.
    • Spot nocturnal animals such as lorises, civets, wild pigs, reptiles, owls, and glowing insect eyes in the dark.
    • Experience the mysterious sounds of the jungle at night—an unforgettable highlight.

Day 4: Trek to Jak Yus Sacred Mountain (10-15km walking )

  • 6–7 hrs trekking | Mountain edge camp
  • Trek through hills and dense jungle toward Jak Yus Mountain, the highest peak inside Virachey National Park.
  • Chance (not guaranteed) to spot wild elephants in the distance.
  • Camp at the mountain’s edge, as the summit is too windy for overnight stays.

Day 5: Sunrise Wildlife Spotting & Mountain Summit ( approx. 5-7km walking)

  • Early morning hike & trek down to river camp
  • Rise at 4:00 AM to follow the calls of gibbons and listen to the jungle awakening.
  • After breakfast, trek to the summit of Jak Yus for panoramic views of Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.
  • Descend to the river and camp by the water for the night.

Day 6: Waterfalls & Remote Jungle Camp (approx. 7-10km walking)

  • 5–6 hrs trekking
  • Trek to a hidden jungle waterfall and set up camp beside it.
  • Highlights:
    • Learn jungle survival skills.
    • Swim in natural pools.
    • Experience the solitude of one of Asia’s wildest forests.

Day 7: Bamboo Raft Building & Camping along the river (approx. 1-3km walking)

  • Trek 1-2 hours to a river spot where you will build the bamboo.
  • Work together to build up a bamboo raft from scratch, cut bamboos, make strings out of bamboo, tie bamboos up together to make a raft.
  • Paddle downstream for 3 hours, navigating gentle rapids and enjoy the jungle views along the way with chances of spotting kingfishers
  • Camping along the river and fishing.

Day 8: River Rafting & Return to Banlung (approx. 1-2km walking )

  • 3 hrs rafting | Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
  • After breakfast, continue bamboo rafting downriver for 3 hours.
  • Arrive back at the same village from Day 1 for lunch with your ranger.
  • Travel south by boat to Veun Sai, then return to Banlung (1-hour drive).

  • Explore one of Asia’s last great jungles, still wild and largely unexplored.

The prices include:

  • English speaking guide,

Things to bring:

  • During the actual trek; long trousers, T/shirt, bathing suit, closed shoes, sun cream, insect repellent, sun glasses, camera, small first aid kit, toiletries.
  • During the night; a set of clothes for the night, sandals or flip flops, towel, head-torch.

Note: From November till the middle of February nights can be cold.
